It will be recalled that at present both INPP reactors are shut down and are at the safe maintenance phase. The fuel is completely unloaded from reactor 1 and placed to the spent fuel storage pools. On 1 February 2011 the unloading of spent fuel from the reactor of Unit 2 and its transfer to the storage pools was started. Currently 500 spent fuel assemblies are being unloaded from Unit 2 reactor in order to minimize any risk for safety and to accelerate the transfer of the spent fuel to the Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (ISFSF) when it will be constructed.

On 24 February at SE Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant the planned organization of the integrated practical training of emergency preparedness took place which is aimed at practical checking of new version of “INPP Emergency Preparedness Plan” and the ability of the power plant personnel to act during the organization of emergency preparadness. The practical training was supervised by the representatives of the State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI), Fire and Rescue Department under the Ministry of the Interior and Radiation Protection Centre. INPP Emergency Preparedeness Plan and actions of the personnel during the organization of emergency preparedness have been positively evaluated.

According to INPP specialists, there is no any possibility (even theoretical) that the scenario of the catastrophe happened with Japan Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant will repeat in Lithuania, since Lithuania is quite safe in terms of seismicity and INPP is a non-operating nuclear facility with unloaded fuel. Four seismic stations which constantly observe seismic conditions are installed in the surroundings of INPP.
