2011-04-14 Ignalina and Chernobyl NPP Seek Closer Cooperation in the field of decommissioning

On 11-14 April, the Head of the SE Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) Osvaldas Čiukšys together with the Head of Decommissioning Projects Management Service Sergej Abdulajev, the Head of Radioactive Waste Management Service Aleksandr Oryšaka and UP01 Project manager Aleksej Merežnikov visited Ukraine. The purpose of the visit was to consolidate present cooperation and discuss of new cooperation directions and potentials with Ukrainian decommissioning professionals.

During the visit to Ukraine the INPP delegation met with the Management of the Chernobyl Center for Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Waste and Radioecology. The potential means of decommissioning of nuclear power plants with RBMK type reactors, radioactive waste management and adaption of Information technology were discussed at the meeting. The prospects of cooperation on relevant nuclear facilities decommissioning issues were also discussed. On the same day the INPP delegation visited Chernobyl International Radioecology Laboratory.

The INPP delegation also visited the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant site where became familiar with the constructed Industrial Complex for Solid Radioactive Waste Management (in Lithuania the larger complex (project B2/3/4) is under construction). The setting-up of systems, commencement of commissioning and other issues were discussed.

Ignalina NPP Director General O.Čiukšys and Chernobyl NPP Director General Igor Gramotkin discussed the prospects of mutual cooperation on practical decommissioning issues, relationship with foreign contractors, social and other matters.

The meeting between O.Čiukšys and Head of Ukrainian National Expropriated Zone Management Agency under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Ukraine Volodymyr Chološa was organized with assistance of Embassy of Lithuania in Ukraine. The prospects of cooperation at the ministerial and organizational levels were discussed during the meeting. Director General informed V.Chološa on the INPP intention to establish the Specific EU Irradiated Graphite Competence Center.

During the visit the INPP delegation also met with Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Viktor Maiko and Ukrainian State Committee for Nuclear Regulation Chairman Olena Mikolaichuk.
