2011-10-26 INPP Was Allowed to Commence Implementation of Two Decommissioning Projects

On 19 October 2011 the conditions of Ignalina nuclear power plant‘s (INPP) Unit 1 decommissioning license were changed by the order of Head of State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate. The modification of license conditions allows the enterprise to commence INPP Unit 1 Turbine Hall equipment and Boiler House equipment dismantling and decontamination (projects B9/1 and B9/5).

After INPP Unit 1 shutdown most of the Turbine Hall systems and equipment can be dismantled. Only general systems of the plant remain in operation, as well as systems providing normal operational conditions of the systems and buildings remaining in operation (heating and ventilation, lighting and fire fighting systems, drainage system, etc.). About 15,799 tons of equipment most of which will be turbines and turbines system components, pumps, valves and pipelines (15,000 m), will be dismantled and decontaminated after the implementation of B9/1 project.

After project B9/5 completion about 1557 tons of equipment will be dismantled and decontaminated. Boiler house is equipment that carried out the supply of heat and hot water to the consumers including Visaginas residents. The main part of it is network pumps and heaters, volume compensators, pipelines and metal structures. The majority of equipment is non-contaminated and processed materials can be reused in economical activities without restrictions after the radiological inspection.
