An important milestone has been reached

On 24 September, an agreement signed between Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) and PLC Svertas Group on the service for determining the conditional uncontrolled levels of radioactivity of waste accumulated at the INPP Industrial Waste Landfill entered into force. "The signing of this agreement is the result of consistent and responsible cooperation between INPP specialists and our reliable partners - CPMA, PLC Svertas Group, the State research institute Center for Physical Sciences and Technology and the Lithuanian Energy Institute, which will ensure professional and timely performance of the planned work." said INPP Director General Mr. Audrius Kamienas.

The contract was signed for 2 years, its value is EUR 719,000 without VAT. The main purpose of this agreement is to determine the conditional uncontrolled levels of radioactivity of the waste accumulated in the INPP industrial waste landfill to no longer apply the radiation safety requirements to the Landfill. Once approved, radiological control will no longer be needed, and the territory will be given the status of a landfill, i.e., the waste could be left safely (subject to certain safety and environmental monitoring measures) at its current location.

The landfill in the territory of INPP was put into operation in 1985 and was closed in 2015. This is an area with 15 separate landfills for the disposal of various industrial waste. During the operation period of the Landfill, about 30,842 m3 of waste was accumulated. It consists of mixed construction and demolition waste, various packaging, obsolete equipment parts, biodegradable waste, etc.

The activities are funded by the 2014-2021 Norwegian Financial Mechanism under the project "Safety Enhancement of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant Radioactive Waste Management".
