GENERAL INFORMATION

The Law on Nuclear Energy of the Republic of Lithuania establishes the main requirements for the physical safety of a nuclear power facility (nuclear power plant, nuclear reactor, storage facilities for nuclear materials and radioactive waste, and their reprocessing facility).

The largest and most important nuclear power facility in Lithuania is the State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP), which finally stopped producing electricity in 2009. INPP decommissioning works are currently being carried out - radioactive waste is being managed, new nuclear power facilities, radioactive waste storage facilities and repositories are being built or planned.

Another nuclear facility is the Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility in Širvintos District, which stores radioactive waste collected from industrial enterprises, medical and scientific institutions. Radioactive waste is stored in the repository until its closure, i. until 1989. These wastes and radionuclide-contaminated structures and soil are planned to be removed from the repository, sorted and transported to INPP radioactive waste management facilities, where they will be treated and temporarily stored in suitable repositories, and then placed in radioactive waste repositories.

All Lithuanian nuclear power facilities are operated by SE Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.
