Explorative Expeditions

The nuclear power plant that operated in Lithuania is located in the municipality of Visaginas, near Lake Drūkšiai – the largest lake in the country – and is known as the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.

This is a unique place that housed two of the most powerful nuclear reactors in the world. Although the plant is no longer operational and is currently being decommissioned, it remains an important historical and industrial landmark that continues to attract visitors. Today, one of the most complex environmental projects in Lithuania – and possibly in the entire Baltic region – is being implemented here. Come and see this megaproject up close!

The guided expeditions offered at this former Lithuanian nuclear power plant are not your typical tour. They are in-depth, educational, and immersive walks through the plant’s facilities and grounds, providing a rare opportunity to explore Lithuania’s nuclear energy legacy, observe the decommissioning process firsthand, and glimpse the vision for the future of nuclear power.

✍️ Register for the expeditions by filling out this form. We will contact you within 5 business days to confirm the details of your participation. Important: this registration is intended to gauge your interest, therefore a place is reserved only after full coordination of participation details, which depends on both your needs and the availability of expeditions.

Important information:

✔️Registration for expeditions is currently closed - all the places are booked until May. We plan to announce registration for May and the summer months in the middle of April.

✔️Expeditions are organised on Thursdays and Fridays, in Lithuanian, English or Russian.

✔️There is only one expedition per day. For example, if the "Expedition to the future of the INPP" is booked, there are no other expeditions that day.

✔️Only persons over the age of 18 are allowed on all expeditions, and the maximum number of people in a group is 15.

✔️The expeditions are paid, and the fee is waived for representatives of educational institutions, students, schoolchildren and representatives of the mass media publicising the activities of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.

✔️Before embarking on the expedition, please take a responsible assessment of your health condition - during the expedition we will be walking intensively a lot, climbing stairs, and will be on our feet all the time.

✔️ Personal data is collected and strict visitor screening is conducted to prepare permits for access to a nuclear energy facility.

✔️ Important: we organise educational expeditions without agents! We have been informed that various agents are inviting you to register and pre-pay for expeditions for which we have not yet announced the registration, as we are in the process of preparing the schedule. We do not reserve advance places for agents, so you will only have a guaranteed chance to participate in an expedition without overpaying once you have registered with our contacts.

THE ROUTES:

GRAND EXPEDITION INTO NUCLEAR TRANSFORMATION

Start: 9:00

Duration: one working day

Price: 85 Eur per person

Maybe you dream of working in a nuclear power plant? We can make your wish come true! We invite you to spend a day at Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, taking on the role of a member of the atomic team while visiting unique and, in some cases, never-before-seen spaces. Experience and see this megaproject with your own eyes, make sure that all work is carried out safely and responsibly, and get answers to all your questions. This expedition combines the short and quick expedition routes, so we will spend the whole day in unique places - the temporary spent fuel storage facility, the turbine hall, the fuel cooling pool, the reactor control room, etc., stopping for a quick lunch in the unique Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant canteen.

Depending on the situation at the plant, the itinerary may be adjusted.

A SHORT EXPEDITION TO THE ATOMIC PAST

Start: 9:30

Duration: 3-4 hours

Price: 70 Eur per person

Why was Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant built? How did it work? What did people do all day? These are just some of the questions you will hear the answers to on this expedition! We will be exploring the controlled territory of the plant, so you will have the chance to see what the impressive spaces and machinery looked like and how they worked, and the first thing we will have to do is dress up in real, snow-white worker's clothes. We will visit the turbine hall, the fuel cooling pool, the reactor control room to discuss the specifics of how the reactors are operated, and the nuances of liquid radioactive waste management by visiting the waste management complex.

Depending on the situation at the plant, the itinerary may be adjusted.

QUICK EXPEDITION TO THE ATOMIC FUTURE

Start: 10:00

Duration: 1-1.5 hours

Price: 25 Eur per person

Does shutting down a nuclear power plant mean switching off the reactors, turning off the lights, putting a lock on the door and going home? Absolutely not! It's a long and complex process that will take decades, so this expedition will try to look into the future by visiting the Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (ISFSF), which is open to visitors for the first time. You will see the impressive casks where most of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant's spent fuel is stored, have the chance to try on the stylish coats and helmets of the staff, discuss in detail the entire nuclear fuel cycle from the uranium mine to the final storage site, and find out what work and processes have been done and what is yet to come.

Visitors are not allowed to bring personal belongings, to film, and take photos at the INPP controlled areas during the tour. However, visitors can be photographed individually or together with a group of people by the INPP representative. The INPP respects the individual's right to an image, therefore photography is taken only with the consent of the visitors orally and / or in writing and only at the request of the visitors. The INPP photos can be transferred in digital format at the request of the visitors, and photos with the visitors' images are stored for no longer than 5 working days, after which they are permanently destroyed.
