The Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant State Enterprise (hereinafter - the Enterprise, the INPP) has published its Corporate Social Responsibility (Sustainability) Report 2022, which presents the most significant non-financial results. Over the past year, the Enterprise has achieved positive results in its sustainability management, implemented various sustainability initiatives and made a significant contribution to the management of the INPP's operational impacts. The 2022 Corporate Social Responsibility (Sustainability) Report of the Ignalina NPP is available here.

Humanitarian aid to Ukraine

The Enterprise delivered more than 367 tonnes of fire extinguishing materials - a foam solution used by Ukrainian emergency services to fight fires - to Ukraine, which is suffering from the war started and continued by Russia. In cooperation with the Ministries of Energy and Transport of the Republic of Lithuania, the rapid transport of the fire-fighting equipment was organised to ensure that the aid reached the people most in need. A further 230 tonnes of firefighting equipment is due to be delivered in 2023.

The INPP employees also organised, on a voluntary basis, the collection of essential foodstuffs and hygiene products for the population of Slavutčiaus. The INPP employees were asked to help the partner city of Visaginas, located near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant, and collected a significant amount of food and other products during the week. For this initiative, the Visaginas Municipality expressed its gratitude to the Enterprise.

"Since the war began, we have stood by Ukraine and its people. We are well aware of the painful experience of the entire Ukrainian people defending themselves against Russian aggression. That's why we immediately started thinking about how we could help. It should be noted that the idea of transferring extinguishing material and providing assistance to Slavutich came from the employees themselves. We can be proud of the empathetic and compassionate people who work at the IAEA," said CEO Audrius Kamienas.

Sustainability report prepared in accordance with an international standard

INPP's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reports have been published as part of the Annual Report since 2018, but this year, for the first time, the Sustainability Report has been prepared in accordance with the international Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard. As a result, the report provides essential information divided into three areas - environmental, social and governance - which together cover 12 of the company's most important sustainability topics.

"We follow global sustainability trends and want to provide our stakeholders with information on sustainability in line with best practices. In accordance with the State's expectations and the recommendations of the Governance Coordination Centre, we have prepared a matrix of the most important sustainability topics for 2022, so it is natural that we have presented the information in the Sustainability Report through these topics. Furthermore, we decided that our Corporate Social Responsibility report would be more meaningful and valuable if we disclosed information using the GRI standard. This allows us to compare our non-financial performance more appropriately with that of other organisations. We are pleased to have taken a significant qualitative step forward in INPP's disclosure practices," said Donatas Juodpusis, Head of Sustainable Development.

In 2023, it is planned to improve the disclosure of sustainability results and the necessary data. This is an important contribution by the Board of Directors of the enterprise, which organises a mid-year sustainability strategy session to clarify long-term sustainability goals and improve the management of IAE's environmental, human, and organisational impacts.

Greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 76%.

The Enterprise has made significant progress in managing CO2 equivalent emissions from its operations by 2022. Since the 1st of January, INPP has been using only renewable electricity for its operations. This has reduced the CO2 footprint by more than 76% compared to 2021.

"In 2021, for the first time, we assessed the company's direct greenhouse gas emissions and their sources according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol standard. We saw that the largest share of emissions came from electricity consumption, so we bought green energy and started using it at the beginning of 2022. And this year, we can already see the huge effect it has had - over 76% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions!" - says Juodpusis, who was delighted with the results.

This year, the company also intends to assess its indirect - Scope 3 - greenhouse gas emissions. This will enable the INPP to further identify where the greatest climate impacts are and to manage the impact of emissions accordingly.
